What to Do in Heiligenblut am Großglockner in Summer?

A visit to Pasterze Glacier starts right in Heiligenblut, and also the scenic Grossglockner High Alpine Road to Bruck in Salzburg has its starting point here. Still a traditional summer health resort, Heiligenblut attracts many hikers and walkers: one of the most popular long-distance hiking trails, Alpe-Adria-Trail, leads from Grossglockner through Carinthia, Friuli and Slovenia to the coast of the Adriatic Sea.

The Grossglockner Cable Cars take you right below the summit of Schareck Mountain, an easy trail then leads to the top, offering breathtaking views of the mountain range.  Grossglockner Fell Running, taking place every year in July, is known among athletes as the “most beautiful event in all of Austria “.

Food lovers will not be disappointed with wonderful dining options at traditional mountain huts and inns, such as the famous Wallackhaus or Fuscherlacke guesthouse. Late Gothic “St. Vinzenz” church impresses visitors with its unique location at the bottom of Großglockner Mountain and it is one of the most beautiful pilgrimage churches in Austria.

What to Do in Heiligenblut in Winter?

Overlooked by the majestic Großglockner, way above the romantic village of Heligenblut, is one of the most diverse natural skiing and freeriding arenas of the Alps. Grossglockner/Heiligenblut ski resort boasts fantastic ski trails, snowy slopes and a stunning vista. Whether you are a carver, snowboarder or freerider, the adventure will be a great one. Especially freeriders find a comprehensive service in this high alpine terrain: Freeride Checkpoint at mid-station provides information about the current avalanche situation, open and closed ski routes, local weather, windspeed and temperature. Families visiting Heiligenblut will love Snowland, offering lots of fun for the little ones. Getting hungry on a fantastic skiing day? Local Carinthian delicacies are offered in traditional ski huts.
Winter fun off the pistes can found on perfectly groomed cross-country skiing trails, snowshoe hikes, winter hikes or ice climbing adventures.
