What to Do in Wildschönau?
There is always something happening in Wildschönau. Wildschönau Valley Festival is biggest event of the Lower Inn Valley, taking place each year with a different theme. In autumn, the most colourful event is Almabtrieb, 500 animals return to the valley from the mountains. Every year the traditional Mountain Farming Museum organises a Christmas market, offering local handicraft. Wildschönau farmers cook regional delicacies the old way on an open fireplace. “Ski Juwel Opening Alpbachtal”, taking place annually, attracts many visitors who want to be among the first on the slopes.
Of course, Wildschönau also offers a wide array of outdoor activities such as hiking. Explore some the 300 km well-kept hiking trails, overlooking the beautiful Kitzbühel Alps. The trails are suitable for all levels of ability, ranging from easy valley paths to difficult trails up to summits 2,300 m high. However, no visitor should miss Kundler Klamm, one of the most beautiful natural gorges in Austria. This 3.5 km passage connects Wildschönau to the Inn valley and is suitable for everyone.
Mountain bikers enjoy Wildschönau with its soft mountains, exciting trails and traditional mountain huts. Two legs of Bikeschaukel Tirol are in Wildschönau, one from Alpbach to Niederau-Wildschönau and one from Niederau-Wildschönau to Kirchberg/Brixental. Everyone looking for more excitement should take part in Enduro One, a 30 km downhill race.
Wildschönau is the ideal destination for holidays with the family. The programme of Drachenclub provides fun and excitement for the little ones, from Robinson Crusoe Day to a farm visit. Children will also enjoy one of the many adventure playgrounds in the valley and up the mountain. Auenweg Trail in Niederau is a popular family hike and leads to a playground.
After a long and adventurous day in the mountains take a dip in the Wildschönau outdoor swimming pool to cool off, offering a competition and a public pool as well as a children’s pool with pink elephant slide, playground, trampoline and rope bridge.
What to Do in Winter?
Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau offers fantastic skiing on 145 km of pistes and 47 lifts. The new Schatzbergbahn lift takes you from Schatzberg with its wide family slopes to Alpbachtal’s steeper trails in no time at all. More challenging trails can also be found at Markbachjoch ski resort; Niederau and Oberau, however, are ideal places to make your first turns on snow. Two floodlit night skiing slopes are available at Reitherkogel and Roggenboden. Wiedersbergerhorn boasts a fantastic terrain park, featuring a 150 m halfpipe and lots more suitable for beginners and experts.
Off the ski pistes you find 50 km of cross-country skiing trails, 40 km of winter hiking trails, romantic routes for snowshoe hikes and tobogganing runs. Roggenboden in Oberau organises night tobogganing on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Traditional inns and guesthouses, providing local Tyrolean delicacies, and idyllic rides with a horse drawn sleigh make sure your holidays will be memorable.
