The small village is located in the east of Slovakia, extends for 5 kilometers and is nestled between the Belianske Tatras Mountains and the Spiš Magura. It is located only a few kilometers from Poland and northeast of the High Tatras Mountains. The Biely River flows through the idyllic village that belongs to the Prešovský kraj region. Ždiar is a resort for tourists and in winter it is known as one of the ski resorts in Slovakia. In the past, the region was characterized by pasture farming, but today tourism, forestry and timber industry dominate. The Slovak community is also known for its folklore traditions with the special Goral national costume.
The ski resort Strachan Ski Centrum is located in the mountains of Belianske Tatras. It has three modern ski lifts. The ski slopes total a length of 4.23 kilometers and are suitable for beginners as well as for experienced skiers. They are freshly groomed every day to ensure optimal skiing pleasure. 0.50 kilometers of slopes are illuminated, so evening skiing is another highlight in the ski resort. The best snow conditions prevail on the slopes from December to March. There is a free parking lot for visitors only a few meters from the ski lifts,. The ski resort is ideal for a skiing vacation with children not only because of its slopes but also because ski instructors and daily professional child care are available. Furthermore, there is a climbing trellis, a wooden house and a snow mountain for fun and games in the ski area. By the way, children under the age of five ski for free when accompanied. Near the ski resort there is enough accommodation for a perfect ski vacation in Slovakia. If you do not have your own ski equipment, you can rent it directly on site in Strachan.
Ždiar is one of the traditional Goral communities in Slovakia. You can admire the different old types of houses in the village, which are characteristic for the Goral and an important part of the folk culture of the region. The typical buildings are beautifully decorated wooden log houses with three rooms and closed courtyards. These wooden houses are decorated with ornaments on the windows and doors and the joints between the wooden beams are blue. Other places of interest are the churches and chapels in Ždiar: the Roman Catholic Church from 1831, the Chapel of St. Anne from 1797 and the Chapel from 1811. In summer, the annual highlight is the "Goral Folklore Festival" (Goralské folklórne slávnosti). Polish and Slovak groups celebrate together with dances and songs during this festival, keeping the Goral folk culture alive. The beautiful mountain scenery in Ždiar also invites to hikes in the area and in the famous High Tatras.
