Italie

La République italienne est située en Europe et s’étend en grande partie sur la presqu’île apennine qui est entourée par la Méditerranée et dont la forme rappelle celle d’une botte. Le pays a une superficie de 301.338 km² et compte 60.054.511 habitants, sa capitale est Rome. Dans l’Antiquité, la partie essentielle de l’Empire romain se trouvait sur le territoire de l’actuelle Italie et sa capitale était également Rome. À la Renaissance, c’est l’actuelle Toscanne qui constituait le centre de l’Italie.

Les îles de Sicile et de Sardaigne, qui se trouvent dans la Méditerranée, et les archipels comme par exemple les îles Éoliennes ou les îles Égades, font également partie de l’État italien. Les États voisins de l’Italie sont la France, la Suisse, l’Autriche, la Slovénie ainsi que les enclaves Saint-Marin et l’État du Vatican. Parmi les plus grandes villes italiennes, on peut citer Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin, Palerme et Gênes.

La chaîne de montagnes des Apennins traverse la botte italienne le long d’un axe longitudinal. L’Italie du nord est occupée en grande partie par les Alpes avec leur point culminant, le Monte Bianco/Mont Blanc (4.810 m), qui se trouve à la frontière française. Le long de la partie nord de la côte occidentale de l’Italie s’étend la Riviera italienne en Ligurie et au sud se trouve, entre autres, le Golfe de Naples en Campanie. La côte orientale italienne s’étend du nord au sud de Trieste en Frioul-Vénétie julienne à Gargano dans le nord de la région des Pouilles.

Where is Italy?

Italy is a country in southern Europe, located on the Apennine Peninsula covering an area of 301,300 km2, it is the seventh largest country in Europe and is home to around sixty million people (as of 2021). The capital is Rome, also known as ‘The Eternal City’. Other important cities are Milan, Naples, Turin and Venice. Italy borders France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The sovereign states of San Marino and Vatican City are enclaves within Italy. It also includes the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. The longest river in Italy is the Po with a length of 652 kilometres. Italy has a coastline 7,500 kilometres on the Mediterranean Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, Ligurian Sea and the Adriatic Sea, all boasting incredibly beautiful beaches to relax and do water sports. 35% of the Italian territory is mountainous, the tallest mountain is Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc) with 4,810 metres.

What to do in Italy?

Italy is ideal for city trips, e.g. to Venice, Florence, Pisa or Rome. Italy’s capital is home to many world-famous sights such as the Colosseum, St Peter's Basilica, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon and many more. Vatican City is the world’s smallest independent state and seat of the Roman Catholic Church. Here you find the St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel.
