Where is Saarburg?

Saarburg is a city in the Trier-Saarburg district of Rhineland-Palatinate/Germany. The historic city sits at the entry of the river Leukbach in the western part of Saar-Hunsrück nature reserve.

Sights in Saarburg

The picturesque old town features a 127m long and 38m wide castle. Very interesting places to visit are Oberstadt at Buttermarkt and the bridges with St. Laurentius church and St. Marien church.

When visiting Saarburg, the waterfall at the city centre must not be missed. Impressive Saarburg waterfall plunges from a height of eighteen metres. At the bottom of the waterfall, you find Hackenberg Mill and the former electoral mill today home to the Mill Museum and Amüseum.

One of the most beautiful walks runs along the river to Saarburg Castle which dates from the 10th century. Sitting above the river Saar and the city, the castle provides one of the most stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. The castle is one of the oldest in the west of Germany.

Families will enjoy a visit to the Birds of Prey Park featuring impressive demonstrations. Those interested in craftmanship have to visit the Bell Foundry Museum providing detailed information about this traditional artform.

Hiking in Saarburg: Heaven for Hikers

700m Saarburg chairlift takes you to the top station where you can get into “Saar Sled” and ride down the mountain on the exciting Alpine coaster. Warsberg mountain is the perfect starting point for many hikes and walks such as to the Birds of Prey Park, to Ayl or to Mannebach.

Saar-Leuktal-Panorama loop trail is a 13 km trail that starts near Saarburg and leads through the idyllic Saar-Leuk valley. The trail boasts stunning scenery of dense woods, soft hills and riverbanks.

"König Johann Loop" in Freudenburg is a picturesque trail attracting both nature and culture lovers as it features idyllic woods, historic sites and stunning views of the Saar valley. The trail leads past the castle.

The shortcut via Moselsteig-Seitensprung Saar-Riesling-Steig runs from Schoden and Ockfen through picturesque vineyards and villages.
